[edit] Wiki – Shared Area Discussion

Principal behind the Shared Area: to provide a private space

Principal behind the wiki: To provide a public space for IFIwatchnet participants to contribute as easily as possible

Peter Chowla has written a useful critique http://www.ifiwatchnet.org/sa/?q=node/54

Proposed Rationale:

1. Keep only conversations that need to be private on the shared area

  • (Private items) from Steering Committee minutes
  • Private “leaked documents”
  • Documents related to specific processes that have specific finance or human resource implications. (Details on fundraising plans, animator recruitment plans

2. Where possible have things on the wiki

Comment (jeff): This doesn't yet deal with the formatting issues on the wiki that make having a back-and-forth conversation over time difficult (ie. our enhancment list)

Issues:

1. Publicity of the wiki: Make it accessible but not in search results

  • I propose that we make it a link off www.ifiwatchnet.org
  • Set it as a “no follow” link and insert in the page a “Don’t index it Google tag”

2. Shared area

  • Set up three security authorizations (people can hold more than one role) i. SGii. Animatoriii. Leak participant
  • Move all items that don’t fall into the above three categories onto the wiki.

Comment (jeff): We need to allow members to set up new conversation topics, add/delete participants. If technically possible, would be great to be able to give access to individuals by conversation topic (ie. I could invite an academic into a discussion on human rights, but she wouldn't then be able to see other more NGO-sensitive threads).

Sept. 23, 2007 [Soren]: The shared-area discussion on the uses of IFIwn during the upcoming annual meetings is now up and running. I think I find the format there more conducive to discussion than on a wiki. But I want to keep working on both and see what emerges. I hope others agree and will see what's being discussed there -- it's pretty interesting.
